Dr. Laura Hills Discusses Professionalism on Rebecca Morehead’s Popular Radio Show
Rebecca Morehead interviewed Dr. Laura Hills on the hallmarks of professionalism on the More for Your Practice radio show on April 17.
April 17, 2013:
We all recognize and appreciate professionalism when we see it. However, it’s not crystal clear to everyone what makes an individual’s behavior professional. That’s what Dr. Laura Hills told host Rebecca Morehead on the More for Your Practice radio show on April 17.
Says Dr. Hills, “Money, training, know-how, and status aside, professionalism is a matter of attitude and behavior. It means not just knowing how to do your job, but demonstrating a willingness to learn, cooperating and getting along with others, showing respect, living up to your commitments, and much more.” Dr. Hills shared with Morehead and her listeners 15 characteristics of professionalism. Some of these are manifested in an individual’s behaviors (such as the way that they communicate or dress). But some characteristics are manifested in an individual’s attitudes (such as his or her work ethic or commitment to acting with integrity). Dr. Hills warned listeners that perceptions about what is professional vary from person to person, and that the time and generation in which an individual grew up can be a strong determinant in what he or she considers to be professional.
Rebecca Morehead is a professional practice strategist with more than 20 years of experience in medical practice management.
